Biography

Kristen Hartke is a journalist and photographer living in New York City; she also teaches courses in Food Journalism and Writing about the Arts at American University in Washington, DC. Her work appears regularly in the Washington Post, Food & Wine, NPR, Better Homes & Gardens, Eating Well, and other national publications; while she often covers food culture, she also covers travel, arts, health, sports, and politics. She frequently works as a recipe tester and developer with many chefs, and was culinary producer for seven years for chef and television personality Carla Hall. Cookbooks that Kristen has worked on include Joe Yonan's “Cool Beans” (2020) and "Mastering the Art of Plant Based Cooking" (2024, winner of a 2025 James Beard Award), and Sapna Punjabi's "Dal Chawal" (2025).
