Biography
Krystal Kavita Jagoo graduated from York University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 2008 and a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Windsor in 2010. Since graduate studies, Jagoo has worked for a decade in various roles in North Bay, Port Perry, and Toronto, providing mental health counseling services, which has further developed her critical thinking skills. She understood the need for an anti-oppressive practice approach from clinical work before transitioning to full-time employment in an equity office at the University of Toronto. By December of 2021, Jagoo could no longer ignore the devastating impact of white supremacist workplace harassment on her health, so she has resigned, but continues to pursue equity work. Jagoo's passion for lifelong development is demonstrated by her past time on the board of directors at the Capitol Centre, and serves on a Project Advisory Committee on Women's Sexual Health for the Association for South Asian AIDS Prevention. She has completed all the Level 1 Play Therapy courses and the Indigenous Awareness Training Certificate. Jagoo has taught "Justice and the Poor: Issues of Race, Class, and Gender" at Nipissing University, and facilitated Writing for Social Change workshops for the Saskatchewan Writers Guild, as well as Sustainable Resistance for BIPOC Folx workshops for Scarborough Arts. Jagoo's articles have been featured in Healthline, Prism, Canadaland, Auto Trader, Chatelaine, Best Health, Asparagus Magazine, etc. Her essay, "Inclusive Reproductive Justice," was published in Volume 2 of the Reproductive Justice Briefing Book: A Primer on Reproductive Justice and Social Change. Her visual art, "University Ableism Bingo" was featured in Pandemic: A Feminist Response, and the zine, CRIP COLLAB. Her essay, "The Willful Ignorance of Most White Administrators" was selected for Scarborough Arts' 35th Annual Juried Exhibition: Beloved Community, and published in the Big Art Book. Her memoir essay, "A Slow Death in Academia" was published in Radical: An Unapologetic Anthology by Women & Gender Nonconforming Storytellers of Color. Jagoo completed the Crossing Gibraltar storytelling program with Cahoots Theatre and the QueerAsian writing workshops with Historic Joy Kogawa House. She has received grant funding from the Ontario Arts Council and the Toronto Arts Council to work on her essay collection, "They Colonized Even My Tongue."
