Biography

I'm a journalist who has a background in Law and keen interests in educational reform, political transparency, the applications of technology in governance, and lived experiences of everyday people. I am the author of On Words and Awards, co-author of The Road before the Fourth Estate: A Guide to Becoming the Ultimate Campus Journalist, and editor of Lines from the Fount (Volume I). At present, I work as an Investigative Reporter at the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR), a not-for-profit independent media organisation based in Abuja. There, I have written hundreds of reports, consisting primarily of fact-checks, analytical reports, and investigative stories bordering on health, education, procurement, politics, rights violations, etc. I am one of few journalists in Nigeria who have worked with the Institute of War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) on its Human Rights Advocacy and Reporting Project, executed in collaboration with Civil Society Organisations. I’ve also benefited from the Open Contracting Reporting (OCR) project powered by the MacArthur Foundation as well as Ford Foundation’s Social Justice and Accountability reporting project. In August 2019, I was among five journalists across Africa selected by Africa Check to participate in a two-week fact-checking fellowship. In the same year, I was awarded the 2019 West Africa Media Excellence Award (WAMECA) for the best report in Telecommunications and ICT. The report, Information, Foreign Affairs, Science … 20 ministries you should not bother e-mailing, shed light on the abysmal emailing culture of federal ministries in Nigeria. After its publication, the government invited the ICIR to be part of a monitoring committee to document shortcomings and progress in the various MDAs in terms of ICT. Another report I’m very proud of is Pushed Beyond Borders, a three-part series where I exposed how traffickers in Nigeria smuggle in children and deliver them to various clients requiring their service as well as the horrors the victims constantly go through. The trafficking route between Benin Republic and Nigeria has particularly drawn little attention from journalists. The first part of the report essentially sheds light on the operations of the traffickers through an undercover lens and how young Beninese children are abused by their “owners” in Nigeria. The second part zooms in on the push and pull factors still encouraging Beninese parents to give up their children and the children to run off on their own into the hands of traffickers. It also explains how the government in Benin is making matters worse. The concluding report shares hard evidence of how commodities and people (foreigners) are smuggled into Nigeria through the connivance of security agents manning the borders who demand bribes to look the other way. In 2018, I was a joint winner of the Budeshi Datathon Writers’ Challenge as well as a recipient of the PTCIJ Award for Best Opinion Piece. Asides my full-time engagement with the ICIR, I work as a Freelance Technical Writer for Media Insight, a marketing communications company through which I have developed features reports for the UNDP, UNICEF, EU, DFID, and so on. I am also the Editor of Non-Fiction and Cultural Criticism at Agbowó, an Afrocentric literary and arts community where great literary and visual African arts are collected and promoted.
