Company Info

New Jersey Herald

The New Jersey Herald was founded in 1820 by Col Grant Fitch, a Newton Merchant, and remains the only daily newspaper in Sussex County. The newspaper covers the Sussex County area including parts of Warren and Passaic counties in New Jersey, Orange County in New York and Pike County, Pennsylvania. The first newspaper in Sussex County was the Sussex Register, which made its appearance on Monday, July 6, 1813. The Register was four pages and was published with a staff of two: the founder, John H. Hall, and one assistant. Hall also delivered the paper. The office was in Deckertown (now Sussex Borough), then moved to Lewisburg, a mile away, and in 1830 moved to Newton, where it remained until the paper was purchased by The New Jersey Herald in 1943. Since Col. Fitch first published the newspaper in 1829, The New Jersey Herald has continuously provided news and advertising for Sussex County and northwest New Jersey. The New Jersey Sunday Herald daily started publication on June 11, 1962. The paper remained a weekly newspaper until it started publishing daily on March 16, 1970, following the purchase of the paper by American Newspapers Inc., an independent newspaper publishing group, in 1969. In December 1986, Quincy Newspapers Inc., a family-owned and-operated media company, became the sole owner of The Herald.
