Arts, Culture, and Lifestyle Journalist | Film Critic | Educator | Freelance Writer. Lauren DiBenedetto is a Toronto-based journalist, educator, and researcher with an expertise in arts, culture, lifestyle, and film. With an Hon. BA in English and a minor in Arts, Media, Performance & Design (Theatre specialization) as well as a Bachelor of Education from York University, Lauren further fostered her academic skills and obtained a Master of Arts in Literatures of Modernity from Toronto Metropolitan University. Their work combines sharp analytical insights, cultural critique, and a deep passion for storytelling. Lauren's journalism experience includes feature writing, reviews, and profiles. Their work has been published in Broken Pencil Magazine, where they have fostered international relationships, highlighting broader cultural arts scenes. Lauren has also contributed creative non-fiction, including "Butterflies & Rashes" in the White Wall Review. As a film professional and academic, Lauren's research focuses on queer cinema, women's theories, and the intersections of film and literature. Their master's thesis explored contemporary lesbian camp cinema and coined the "lesbian renaissance" in modern media. They have presented at conferences both locally and globally such as The University of Texas at Dallas' RAW Conference, and guest lectures on queer cinema for Soul Pepper Theatre. Lauren's professional history includes writing and editing roles with Broken Pencil Magazine, The White Wall Review, a publishing internship with RE: Books Publishing, and event production with TIFF and The Black Academy. They continue to act as an advocate for the arts and arts education, having served as a graduate assistant for Toronto Metropolitan University in the Film and Literature course and continue to serve as a teacher with the York Catholic District School Board in English and Theatre. When not writing or teaching, Lauren is immersed in Toronto's creative communities, fostering connections and amplifying underrepresented voices. With a vibrant, witty, and deeply analytical approach, Lauren's work continues to inspire and engage readers, bringing life to stories at the heart of arts and culture.
