Biography
A dual US/EU citizen born in Dallas, Texas and a graduate of the Honors Program at UCLA with a B.A. in political science, Liam Gowing began his journalism career as a freelancer for LA Weekly (2002-2004) and SPIN Magazine (2004 to 2010), for which he wrote the ASME Best-Profile-Award-nominated expose "Mr. Misery" on the death of acclaimed singer-songwriter Elliott Smith. He continued as the first LA City Editor for the A.V. Club (2006-2007) then migrated to the staff of the Los Angeles Times (2007-2008), where he oversaw the paper's "Outposts" blog, wrote the recreational column "Action Man" and fronted its online video series. After writing and shopping a feature film script based on the column, then writing, arranging, performing and recording "an instant indie-rock classic" album of original songs, Liam began working as an educator. After teaching an LSAT prep course for Kaplan in Los Angeles (2015-2017), he moved to Shanghai, China where he worked as an English teacher at the Shanghai Institute of Tourism (2017-2018). Thereafter, he served as a lecturer in English Literature and oversaw the freshman English major writing program at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (2018-2022), while also serving as an ad hoc copy editor for the translation department. He returned to journalism with a major op-ed piece on the draconian Shanghai lockdowns of April-May 2002 for the Los Angeles Times. Having concluded several years of DIY recording sessions during his summer and winter breaks from teaching in China, he concurrently returned to music, releasing the two halves of an epic double album—Mother Lode: Alpha and Mother Lode: Omega—on his own imprint MojoSon Music on Nov. 15, 2022. In the fall of 2023, he returned to Shanghai, China where he once again teaches English for the SJTU School of Foreign Languages and School of Medicine as well as Business Communication for the USC-SJTU Joint Institute of Cultural and Creative Industry.
