Biography
MUSIC: MY FIRST LOVE Among the early scenes from my childhood is the enthralling memory of loving to watch and hear my aunt Winnie play piano. I took piano lessons from age 9 to 12. My first love was music. I continue to express my love for music by writing my own original songs, which I record, accompanying myself on guitar or keyboard. I share my musical compositions at SoundCloud. On YouTube, my husband Ron, who is a landscape artist, has created videos featuring his art work accompanying my original songs. My most significant musical influence—aside from my aunt's piano playing—has always been the Everly Brothers; I learned to sing harmony listening to the angelic voice of Phil Everly harmonizing with his talented brother Don. I serve as one of the chant leaders at the meetings of our local Self-Realization Fellowship meditation group. As a chant leader, I play the harmonium to accompany our chanting of songs from the hymnal Cosmic Chants by our founder and guru Paramahansa Yogananda, who is known as the "Father of Yoga in the West." Not only has music been a pleasant influence in my life, but it has also afforded me the blessing of being able to serve the work of my belovèd Guru. QUALIFICATIONS: WRITING FOR HUBPAGES My primary contributions to HubPages are based on my studies in the literary field; the bulk of my writing includes commentaries on poems. But because I also hold many alternative views regarding political, social, philosophical, scientific, and medical issues, I sometimes contribute essays focusing on controversial issues in those areas. For example, some of the currently debated topics that I address are global warming, the influence of identity politics and political correctness, the efficacy and safety of vaccines, and the authorship of the Shakespeare canon. I also express a very different view from the traditional one regarding the thematic arrangement of the Shakespeare sonnets. I engage those controversial topics even as I keep in mind that one pays a price for challenging the biases of the proponents of Marxist statism, disciples of identity politics, sycophants of political correctness, and participants in the Censorship-Industrial Complex. Specialist in Literary Studies I have engaged in studies as a literary specialist since 1972 after completing the M.A. degree in German and English at Ball State University. I have researched, studied, and written about the works of classic poets, novelists, dramatists, and essayists. I have published three essays in the academic journal, The Explicator: "Emerson’s 'Days' (Vol. 45, Nr. 1, Fall 1986); "Lawrence’s Women in Love" (Vol. 46, Nr. 2, Winter 1988), "Dickinson’s 'There's been a Death, in the Opposite House'" (Vol. 50, Nr. 4, Summer 1992). After completing the Ph.D. degree in British, American, and World literature with a cognate in rhetoric/composition at Ball State University in 1987, I taught English composition, honors humanities, and poetry writing in the English department at BSU as a contractual assistant professor from 1987 until 1999. My Poem Commentaries While I delve into topics other than poetry from time to time, my main focus is on writing commentaries about classic and contemporary poetry. The main purpose of my commentaries is to assist others, especially students and beginning readers of poetry, in assessing meaning in each poem. The commentaries are offered as a starting point and not a final exhaustive analysis or explication. In my commentaries on poems, I focus solely on the issues that have most strongly caught my attention; thus, my commentaries feature my responses and reactions to the text in order to elucidate meaning and foster appreciation of the poems. Politically, historically, or socially themed poems sometimes require resources to further inform or to support my stance. In those instances, I offer a complete list of sources consulted that offer additional information and/or that support my claims. Thank you for visiting my creative writing efforts. Questions, comments, and/or suggestions are always welcome.
