Biography

Dr. Luis Martínez-Fernández is professor of History at the University of Central Florida, a nationally syndicated weekly columnist with Creators Syndicate, and a public speaker. He brings a fresh new voice to syndication, but he’s been around for a while, teaching, researching, and publishing history for over three decades, specializing in Cuban, Caribbean and Latin American history.. His columns have intellectual depth, but his prose is accessible and elegantly readable—never politically correct. His columns are informed by history but always motivated by current issues and concerns. Born in Havana, Cuba one year into the Revolution, his writing reflects the bright colors of the Cuban literary palette: passion, irony, humor, rhythm and rebelliousness. But his writing is also cosmopolitan, largely the result of having traveled widely and having lived in Lima, Peru, Puerto Rico’s San Juan Metropolitan Area, and up and down the US eastern board from Brunswick, Maine to Orlando Florida. His books include: Fighting Slavery in the Caribbean, Revolutionary Cuba: A History, widely acclaimed as the most comprehensive and systematic study on the subject ever written, and Key to the New World: A History of Early Colonial Cuba, winner of the 2018 Florida Book Awards' Bronze Medal for Nonfiction and 2019 International Latino Book Awards Gold Medal (History Category). Before joining Creators Syndicate in 2020, Dr. Martínez-Fernández had written op-eds for different media including the Christian Science Monitor, Chronicle of Higher Education, Orlando Sentinel, Miami Herald, and the Globe Post.
