Maria has covered Lady Vols Basketball for 25 years and currently is a sportswriter for 247Sports Tennessee. She wrote the award-winning book, “The Final Season: The Perseverance of Pat Summitt,” which was published by The University of Tennessee Press and chronicles the last season of the legendary Lady Vols basketball coach. She was named the 2020 recipient of the Mel Greenberg Media Award by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). Named after Mel Greenberg, the Philadelphia Inquirer sportswriter who founded the Associated Press Top 25 women’s basketball poll, the award is presented annually to a member of the media or sports communications professional who has best displayed a commitment to women’s basketball and to advancing the role of the media in the women’s game. Maria is president of the East Tennessee chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and a board member since 2016. She also is a member of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association; Association for Women in Sports Media; and WBCA. She joined the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame board of governors in 2020.
