Biography
Matt Petronzio is the Deputy Chief Communications Officer at Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF USA), which brings medical care to people affected by conflict, disasters, epidemics, and social exclusion while also bearing witness and speaking out on behalf of patients in more than 70 countries. Matt previously worked as the senior director of digital engagement at the International Rescue Committee (IRC), where he led a global team of 25 digital experts in charge of the IRC’s 30+ web and social channels, strategically leveraging organic media and people-centered storytelling to inspire supporters to do more, give more, and stay longer with the organization. He was also the global editorial director at Global Citizen, where he led the international advocacy organization’s editorial strategies and team covering human rights, equality, environmental justice, and the movement to end extreme poverty from the New York City headquarters. Before Global Citizen, Matt was the senior editor of Mashable’s Social Good section, establishing the site’s core coverage area surrounding social justice, identities, philanthropy, and world-changing innovation. He was a major force behind the annual Social Good Summit in partnership with the United Nations Foundation and 92Y, and under his leadership, Mashable’s Social Good vertical was a two-time Best in News & Media finalist for the Shorty Impact Awards. Prior to his six-year tenure at Mashable, Matt worked for Guernica magazine, W. W. Norton & Company, and CURA: A Literary Magazine of Art & Action. He received his bachelor’s degree in English literature and creative writing from Fordham University, where he graduated magna cum laude, and he holds an MFA in creative writing and poetry from Hunter College of the City University of New York. Matt’s journalism has been cited and syndicated across many respected media outlets and organizations, and he wrote four chapters of Mashable’s first book, "Politics Transformed: The High Tech Battle for Your Vote," published in October 2012. He has spoken about social impact and global innovation at a number of events, including the United Nations Summer Academy in New York, +SocialGood UK in London, the Media for Social Impact Summit at the UN, SXSW Eco in Austin, Earth to Paris at COP21 in Paris, Blackbaud Con in Baltimore, and Change.org’s “Comms for Social Good” event series in San Francisco. He’s served on the Leadership Council of the Classy Awards for social innovation and as a judge for Tom’s of Maine’s 50 States for Good initiative, helping to benefit grassroots nonprofits and community projects. Muck Rack highlighted Matt as a standout journalist writing on social change, and CauseVox called him “a journalist you simply cannot miss.”
