Biography
I was born in Appleton, Wis., but grew up in the Twin Cities area (Minneapolis/St. Paul) of Minnesota, with a brief stop in Grand Junction, Colo. I graduated from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul in 2001 with a degree in print journalism. My newspaper jobs included stints at the Forum of Fargo-Moorhead (news reporting intern, 2001), the St. Paul Pioneer Press (sports copy editor, 2002-06), the Baltimore Sun (sports copy editor, 2007-09) and the Palm Beach Post (sports copy editor/night editor, 2011-14) before I joined the multiplatform news desk at the Washington Post in April 2014 to copy edit national, foreign, metro, business and features content. I switched over to the Post's sports multiplatform desk in January 2015 and worked there until November 2018, editing sports content for the Post's print, Web and mobile editions. I served as the slot editor many shifts, distributing assignments to fellow editors and making final decisions on the content and display type while enforcing strict print deadlines. I also worked shifts as night editor, setting reporters’ deadlines and communicating with them throughout the night while handling first reads and reacting to breaking news. I was involved in coverage of the Washington Capitals team that won the 2018 Stanley Cup. In November 2018, I accepted a position as a multiplatform editor at the Los Angeles Times, where I edited articles online and in print for accuracy, content, grammar and style for California's largest daily newspaper. I worked three shifts per week on the Sports copy desk, with some as slot editor. I also worked two shifts per week as a Sports web producer, handling story builds and first reads and helping control the play of stories on the Sports home page. I was involved in coverage of the Lakers and Dodgers teams that won league titles in 2020 and the Rams team that won the Super Bowl in February 2022. In August 2023, I moved back to my home state to begin working as a sports slot editor and digital night editor for the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Minnesota's largest daily newspaper. I did a fair amount of freelance sportswriting for the Associated Press in Minneapolis/St. Paul from 2001 to 2007, and I have written more than 10 sports history books for young audiences. My hobbies include collecting CDs and vinyl records -- mostly rock-and-roll and R&B but also blues, country, jazz and other styles. I also maintain sizable collections of TV shows on DVD and books (many of them on music, sports and U.S. history/politics) and still root for the sports teams I grew up with in the Midwest.
