Biography

Trainee Multimedia Journalist with News Associates, Freelance Writer, London-based, English and Philosophy Graduate from Durham University As a developing writer and editor, my aim is to diversify the media and publishing industry by providing a voice and platform to underrepresented communities and writers. From my first year at university, I was the Student Life editor of the Durham University online student magazine, The Bubble, as well as a regular contributor to Palatinate, the official student newspaper of Durham University. In my final year, I gained the position as a Deputy Editor of The Bubble, overseeing all the sections under the Lifestyle category, whilst successfully managing a team of sub-editors and any issues that arose. I also gained the position of Food & Drinks Editor of Palatinate, providing me with greater editorial responsibilities, as I was expected to source content from contributors, and work with them to produce and edit articles for the print and digital publications, using a mixture of Canva and InDesign, both of which I feel familiar with. Moreover, at university I worked with Durham Markets to create Durham Beyond - a WordPress blog for university students, promoting the local culture in Durham. As I coordinated with their PR Manager I recruited other student writers and organized the publication of their articles. As a contributing writer for various publications including Mesa Magazine, Indiependent, and Marketing Gazette, I have written on issues ranging from diversity and white privilege, to mental health at university. For Marketing Gazette in particular, I have gained experience researching consumer interests and identifying trends as well as competitive title research and SEO analysis. I’ve also gained experience in publishing content to social media channels using Buffer (which is quite similar to Hootsuite) and can therefore aid in designing and scheduling social media posts if needed. I have also spent a year as a writing intern for Fizzymag, and have researched and edited articles from topics including current affairs, feminism and fashion, as well as contributed to their Instagram page. Since May 2020, I have been involved with the founding of Empoword, a woman led publication focused on issues during the pandemic, ranging from politics to mental health. As a team, we have conducted workshops and panels to introduce young writers to the journalism industry, and my individual roles have involved being a Lifestyle Editor, and the Newsletter editor where I send out a weekly newsletter to over 300 subscribers using MailChimp. Writing and compiling the newsletter has developed my ability to write quickly and accurately, using a unique tone of voice, and generating creative ideas to include. One particular article I wrote for Empoword discussing the anxieties of returning to university amidst a pandemic was noticed by ITV, and led to an interview and a feature on national evening news, where I discussed the repercussions of students migrating across the country. In 2019, during my second year at university, I completed a six month internship as an Assistant Editor Intern at Beau Monde Traveler, a luxury travel magazine, where I conducted interviews with Tamara Lohan, Julia Datt, Bonnie Rakhit and others. Alongside working with PR companies and other professionals in the luxury travel and writing industry, I produced an array of articles such as resort reviews. My experience and responsibilities in this role included tasks such as investigating, researching, creating, editing and contributing content to the Beau Monde Traveler online, digital, and print luxury travel and lifestyle publications, where I have developed inspirational travel ideas, worked with influencers and liaised with PR agencies, as well as attended the virtual New Travel Conference 2020 to further engage with members of the industry and develop content ideas. I would describe myself as hard-working and determined, with a tenacious work ethic and am someone who works well independently and alongside others in a team, as I have established during volunteering at a school in Zambia and as a Young Guide Leader. I am able to multi-task, work quickly and accurately under pressure, and am organized and innovative, which are skills that I have shown as chair of my school’s Feminist Society. As a Nightline volunteer at university, I have been a compassionate listener and team member, alongside this role having shown my commitment to any task I am presented with. Following the first year of my volunteering, I became a member of the Nightline committee, as the Rota Officer, where I was more involved with decisions relating to the organisation and our team of dedicated volunteers. I then progressed within the committee with a new role as Training Officer, where I led the termly training weekends recruiting new volunteers, liaising with speakers, and ensuring a high level of sensitivity and ethical practice throughout the training programme, as well as being one of the public ambassadors of Durham Nightline. Responsibility roles at school, university and through volunteering have shown that I am capable of making fast paced decisions and using my initiative. Furthermore, I follow instructions well, whilst also having a creative input on tasks and am an enthusiastic, ambitious person who has developed a mature and responsible approach to any task I undertake.
