Biography

Michael Fitzgerald is editor in chief at Harvard Public Health magazine, an editorially independent publication about what works in public health, what doesn't, and why. Previously he was articles editor at the Boston Globe magazine. Before that, he freelanced for 14 years for publications such as The Economist, Fast Company, Inc. and the New York Times, among others. Prior to going freelance, he held senior editorial management and reporting positions at Red Herring, ZDNet News, "TechTV" and Computerworld. He developed the breaking analysis approach to stories that earned redherring.com several awards, including a Folio Gold Award for Editorial Excellence. He was the founding News Editor at ZDNet, one of the Web's 20 largest sites before it was subsumed by CNET (now part of CBS Interactive). As a journalist, he's won a number of awards, most recently the American Society of Journalists and Authors 2011 Outstanding Article: Business and Technology. He's received two Computer Press Association awards for Best News Story, one as a writer, one as an editor. He was also named Most Prominent Cyberwriter in the 2000 Presstige Awards. He has made numerous appearances on networks like "CNN," "CNBC" and "Bloomberg TV." He was a Nieman Journalism Fellow in 2010-2011, and a Templeton-Cambridge Journalism Fellow in Science and Religion in 2007. He held a TCJF advanced study fellowship in 2009. Mr. Fitzgerald is married and lives with his wife and sons in the Boston area. He holds a degree in history from the University of Chicago.
