Biography
Michael Frank is a journalist and editor who has spent the past 25 years in both print and online media, as well as consulting on projects for multinational corporations, small startups, and academic institutions. His work as an editor led to two National Magazine Awards for Esquire and National Geographic. He currently contributes to Consumer Reports, Hagerty Media, Men's Journal, Gear Patrol, Coolhunting, Forbes, and other outlets, and he's an adjunct professor of journalism at SUNY New Paltz. He covers a wide range of topics including emerging tech and design, as well as designer profiles. His passions include two- and four-wheeled machinery, from bicycles to EVs to electric (and gas) motorcycles. He's been a contributing editor at automotive outlets such as Road & Track and PopMech, and has a decades-long career focusing the automotive industry, including both vehicle reviews and business stories. Frank's reporting has also looked at social issues, such as the hunger crisis in Ulster County, New York, caused in part by the 2020 emergence of COVID-19. In 2017 his work for The Atlantic on undocumented immigrants in the Hudson Valley brought him wide acclaim, and he spoke about that reporting for WNYC, the largest NPR station in the U.S., and followed up that feature with a multipart series for the region's The River Newsroom, covering the saga of Luis Martinez, a New Paltz man wrongfully detained by ICE. P.S. Michael should not be confused with the musician, Michael Franks—he did not write "Popsicle Toes." And there's a different journalist named Michael Frank who wrote "The Mighty Franks," and that man frankly leads a more glamorous existence.
