Mike Hixenbaugh covers the military for The Virginian-Pilot. He won nine awards from the North Carolina Press Association during his tenures with the Rocky Mount Telegram and the Fayetteville Observer. He graduated from the University of Akron in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in communication.
