Biography

I am a journalist from Kashmir. From a young age, I loved telling stories and observing the world around me. This passion led me to study Mass Communication and Journalism at the University of Kashmir. Later, I also completed a degree in Public Administration from IGNOU. My journey in journalism was not simple. I faced many challenges, especially as a woman in a field dominated by men. Despite this, I never gave up. I started my career during an internship with Greater Kashmir. My first story took me to Drang, a faraway village. This trip was tough, but it gave me confidence and proved that I was ready to work hard to tell the stories of people who are often ignored. As the only female journalist with a journalism degree in my area, I have had to overcome many barriers. There were times when people doubted my abilities, but I remained focused. I have written for many national and local newspapers, covering important issues in Kashmir like climate change, the problems faced by tribal communities, and how education has changed after Article 370. I do not limit myself to just journalism. I also write stories. My work has been published in The Citizen. One of my stories is about a tribal woman and focuses on themes like loneliness and strength. I am now working on two books. One is about extraordinary women from Kashmir who have achieved big things in different fields. The other is about a woman who has lived alone for 40 years after her husband’s death.I also work to improve journalism in my region. I am a member of the J&K Media Studies Association, which fights for the rights of qualified journalists. I want schools in Jammu and Kashmir to teach journalism at the higher secondary level and for the government to create more jobs for media professionals.I am currently interning with NewsLaundry, where I am learning more about fact checking/ analysis/Research.... Despite my busy schedule I love my work because it allows me to make a difference.I am not just a journalist; I am also a learner. I love reading books & i'm working hard to improve my English. I want to grow as a writer and hope to use photography in my storytelling one day.My journey has not been easy. I faced rejection when I tried to pitch my ideas to national platforms. But instead of giving up, I learned from my mistakes. With advice from mentors, I changed my approach and started gaining recognition for my work.I am thankful to my family, teachers, and mentors for their support. My parents and professors, like Dr. Rashid Maqbool, have guided me through difficult times. Their encouragement has helped me achieve my goals. In the future, I want to continue writing meaningful stories. I dream of contributing to national platforms and finishing my books. I also want to stay healthy and balance my personal and professional life. My story shows that with hard work and determination, anyone can overcome challenges and achieve their dreams. I strive to be a strong voice for those who are often unheard, and my journey is a message of hope and achievements Nahida Mushtaq
