Biography

Ojoma Akor is a multiple award winning journalist with over a decade experience covering health, science , gender and development among others. She has demonstrated interest and proficiency in doing investigative stories , and covering health and scientific programmes at local and global levels. She presently heads the health desk of Daily Trust newspaper, a national daily in Nigeria. Akor has also received several international fellowships , scholarships and story grants. She has won awards such as the 2021 Global Nutrition and Food security Reporting Contest, the West African print category of the Merck Foundation ‘More Than a Mother’ 2021 Africa media recognition award, and the print category of the ‘Stay at Home’ media recognition awards to raise awareness on coronavirus, organised by Merck Foundation and African First Ladies in 2020. Others include the print category of the Africa Health Budget Media Awards (2020), award of excellence for nutrition reporting by the International Society of Media in Public Health (ISMPH), the PACFaH Media Excellence Awards, and several awards within her organization Daily Trust. Akor is a fellow of the International Women's Media Foundation Global Health Reporting Initiative (IWMF) , International Centre for Journalists (ICFJ) Global Nutrition and Food Security Reporting Fellowship, 2021, the 10th International AIDS Society (IAS) Conference on HIV Science, Mexico, 2019; the HIV Research for Prevention (HIVR4P 2018) global conference in Madrid, Spain, as well as the Research for Prevention (RV4P) virtual conference in 2020. Akor is an alumnus of the Thomson Reuters Foundation and Global Fund health training programme, BBC News Training programme on reporting COVID-19, and the introductory epidemiology course by Chatham House, Bhekisisa Centre For HealthJournalism, Mc-Gill International TB Centre and MESHA, among others. She has received international and national certifications in several health and journalism courses. She is also a grantee of many global story writing grants, and has been a speaker and panelist in numerous medical and scientific conferences.
