Biography

I’m an award-winning science journalist and author of THE HIGH SEAS: AMBITION, POWER AND GREED ON THE UNCLAIMED OCEAN (2024). My work has been published in Nature, WIRED, National Geographic, Guardian, Scientific American, Salon and BBC Wildlife, among other outlets. Now freelance, I spent several years as an online editor with Nature covering climate change before founding the research journal Nature Climate Change in 2009. In 2019, I joined the faculty of Johns Hopkins University as an adjunct lecturer, and in 2020 I received a Giles St Aubyn Award for non-fiction from the Royal Society of Literature in the UK. I live by the sea in Ireland with my husband and children and spend my spare time cold-water swimming, paddle-boarding and kayaking. Learning to surf!
