Biography

Pamela Hill Nettleton is an author, playwright, essayist, magazine writer, and academic, holding a master's degree in mass communication and a doctorate in communication and media studies. She writes a regular column about current media for US Catholic magazine, and her work has appeared in many regional and national publications, online and print, including Redbook, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Readers Digest magazines, FamilyFun, and Better Homes & Gardens. She teaches journalism, communication, and media studies courses at the University of St. Thomas in Saint Paul, MN, and has also taught at the University of Minnesota and Marquette University . Her academic research focuses on masculinity in media and the ways in which domestic violence is covered in magazines and other media. Her research won the Kenneth Harwood Outstanding Dissertation Award from the Broadcast Education Association, a Faculty fellowship at Marquette University’s Gender Resource Center, and two annual awards from the Diederich College Initiative for the Study of Communication, Values, Ethics, and Justice, and appears in academic journals including Television & New Media, Journal of Magazine Media, Women in Communication, and Communication Review. Book chapters of her academic work appear in Race, Gender, Class, and Media, 4th Edition, The Routledge Handbook of Developments in Digital Journalism Studies, Screening Images of Masculinity in the Age of Post-Feminism, and Dangerous Discourses: Gender, Women, and Gun Violence, which was nominated for both the Tankard and the Ritter academic book awards. She is an award-winning teacher, winning the Diederich College of Communication Teaching Excellence Award as well as the prestigious Way-Klingler Teaching Enhancement Award for developing a cross-disciplinary, research-intensive, bilingual undergraduate learning module involving Spanish Literature, Journalism Writing About the Arts, and the Haggerty Museum of Art in Milwaukee. She writes a regular column on media for U.S. Catholic Magazine and more than 200 of her op/ed pieces, features, arts reviews, and essays have appeared in the Star Tribune, Pioneer Press, Better Homes & Gardens, Milwaukee Magazine, Minnesota Monthly Magazine, Redbook, MEL Magazine, FamilyFun, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Reader’s Digest magazines, Mpls/St. Paul Magazine, Southwest Journal, Fine Gardening, Showcase, and others. Her writing has won more than 30 professional awards and honors, including numerous Minnesota Magazine & Publications Association Awards, the Film Advisory Board Award of Excellence, the Dove Foundation Family Approved Seal, and awards from USA Today, Parenting Magazine, Child magazine, Crayola Kids, Sesame Street, and Kids First! She has 24 books in publication in the popular press, including a biography of William Shakespeare and three series of children’s books. Her classical music libretti and scripts have been performed by the Minnesota Orchestra and other symphony orchestras, and her plays have received eight professional and equity productions. She has served as Editorial Director of a number of magazines, including Minnesota Monthly, TC Taste, Midwest Home & Design, Allina Today, Spaces Magazine, and Reader’s Digest Solutions. She has worked in marketing, advertising, public relations, and media relations for health care-related organizations and corporations, developing magazines and communications for internal and external audiences.
