Biography
I am Kenyan-born freelance journalist, strategic communications professional, wordsmith, copy editor and teacher with decades of experience of high school teaching, newspaper editing, reporting, content creating, lobbying for environmental protection, mentoring and coaching. My areas of interest include human interest profiles, wildlife, recreation and sustainable tourism, travel, hospitality, climate change environment, social justice, bioprospecting, nature-based enterprises, African culture and history as well as community development. I have worked in private and public sector organisations where I have championed causes such as environment, health, gender, social justice and education. I started my journalism career at the Standard Media Group as a sub-editor on the Features Desk from 1999 to 2001 from where I later joined the Nation Media Group as a sub-editor and reporter in 2001. Three years later in 2004 I was appointed as editor of the Weekly Advertiser, the media house’s free sheet that has since folded, he moved to the Kenya Wildlife Service in 2006. During my early journalism career, I wrote extensively on HIV/AIDs and covered the second major international scientific conference on Microbicides 2002 at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, officially known as Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine, in Antwerp, Belgium. I also served as a Health and Development Networks Correspondent at the 13th International Conference on AIDS (ICASA), which was held from 22nd to 26th September 2003 in Nairobi, Kenya. ICASA was founded in the late 1980s to focus on HIV/AIDS and STIs in Africa and provides a forum for scientists, policy makers, political leaders and people living with HIV and their advocates. In addition to serving as an editorial consultant with the Kenya Yearbook Editorial Board and contributor to London-based Gecko Publishing Ltd, the publishers of the Kenya Airways inflight magazine Msafiri (The Traveller) from 2011 to date, I have also worked as an associate consultant with Cause Impact, a Nairobi-based strategic communications firm. I was one of the associate editors of the book: Abanyala ba Kakamega: A Historical and Cultural Perspective published in 2018 by the Eldoret-based Utafiti Foundation in Kenya. The pioneering book documents the origins, history and culture of the Banyala ba Mukhamba of the greater Luhya Nation, which is part of the Bantu-speaking people of East Africa. I am widely published in George Wright Forum, Diplomat East Africa, Tembea Kenya (Kenya Tourism Board magazine) Swara, the East Africa Wild Life Society magazine, the defunct Expression Today (by the Media Institute) Destination East Africa, Capital FM, Nairobi Law Monthly, The Star, The Standard, the Daily Nation, the University of South California Center on Public Diplomacy and others.
