San Francisco Bay Area-based writer for Kaiser Health News, @latimes. Previously Cairo-based correspondent for @latimes, gigs at NYDN and others. In more than two decades as a journalist, I've worked on both coasts of the United States as well as spending more than 10 years based in Africa and the Middle East. After graduating from the NYU Journalism school, I began my career covering cops and courts in the Bay Area and then as a two-year intern at the Philadelphia Inquirer. During the first "dot-com boom" at the turn of the millennium, I was the tech reporter at the NY Daily News, covering the rise and fall of the sector as well as the 9/11 attacks. Inspired by that event to write about the world, I moved to Uganda in 2002, where I remained off and on for the next decades, covering mainly public health, especially AIDS, and women's issues. In 2012, a year after the Arab Spring, I moved to Cairo to take a job as the editor of Egypt's premier English-language business magazine. I returned to reporting in 2018 as the L.A. Times Cairo correspondent. In 2019, I moved back home to the Bay Area for family reasons, where I've recently been freelancing for the LA Times and Kaiser Health News. I'm particularly interested in writing about the coronavirus pandemic is highlighting the growing class divide in regions like the Bay Area, where a proliferation of billionaires has masked pockets of growing economic desperation.
