Biography

Rashmi Shivni is a STEM communicator with experience across the science communication spectrum. She is also currently a graduate research/teaching assistant and MS student at Northern Illinois University. Prior to graduate school, she worked as a freelance science writer and technical writer for a scientific government agency. Rashmi was a reporter for multiple newsrooms and covered stories about particle physics experiments, veterinary medicine, microbiology research, and astrophysical discoveries. Her beat at various science desks was astronomy and physics. And as a storyteller, Rashmi often reported on hard sciences using narratives about the characters in the lab, on the field, or at the microscope. Despite focusing on physical sciences, she always took on reporting projects outside her comfort zone. In doing so, she developed a new appreciation for the life sciences and taught others about valuable research in this sector of research. Her career also took her down more technical paths, where she worked as a contracted writer and analyst for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. There, she wrote various technical documents - such as roadmaps, blueprints, white papers, and manuals - for the agency's Innovation Lab and Enterprise Architecture team. Her colleagues later encouraged her to do more data analysis and reporting, albeit introductory, which ultimately prepared her for more research opportunities. The people Rashmi reported on, her fellow science writers, and her colleagues at the FDA encouraged her to pursue higher education as her interests in these technical fields surpassed articles and documentation. Outside of writing, Rashmi put herself through additional coursework to better prepare her for graduate studies. Specifically, she is pursuing a master's degree in science within the field of astrobiology - a field she has grown passionate about through academics and reporting. Her broad interests include astrophysics, microbiology, and biochemistry. And she wants to gain a better understanding of these fields and use them to home in on a specific interest of hers: Rashmi wants to contribute to research in detecting biosignatures on exoplanets. Her interests lie in the origins of life research both on Earth and elsewhere in the universe. And she hopes to obtain a well-rounded, multidisciplinary wealth of knowledge in graduate school to further her specific research goals.
