Biography
The dark 1950s was ending when I was born in a Glasgow still shrouded in smog - a blackened city. My father was born and bred in India and a veteran of the Battle of El Alamein. He was sent to Scotland to train in the snow to fight the Russians. He met my mum, an Irish peasant and they wed. I was brought up in Clydebank with my five siblings. The day I left school in 1976 I went to sign on. There was a line of men in working clothes two miles long outside the dole office. Another shipyard had just closed down. I thought I'd never find work so went to Eastbourne to be a waiter. I returned and moved to Glasgow's west end in 1977. I moved to France before ending up in London in 1979 where I lived until 2001. Moved to Hertfordshire and then to Cambridge. I have three sons aged 38, 15 and 13. The young ones live with me. Their mother Dr Lisa Steen, who was a GP, died in 2016.
