Biography
I am an arts, entertainment, education and technology editor and writer based in Southern California. I'm also a visual art critic and college educator. I currently serve as senior arts and culture editor at Culture OC, a nonprofit arts & culture site that covers Orange County. I'm also a writer & communications specialist at Cal State Long Beach. I have taught journalism at CSULB and Orange Coast College, and served as faculty advisor to The Poly Post, the student newspaper at Cal Poly Pomona. Previously, I was arts and culture editor for L.A. Weekly, one of the nation's oldest alternative newspapers. I was also associate editor of THE Journal, a national magazine and website that covers technology in education, primarily K-12. I also served as editor of Premiere OC, a performing and visual arts magazine, published biannually by Orange Coast magazine, covering music, theater, art, dance and mixed media. I worked as the Orange County Register's arts reporter and visual art critic for 14 1/2 years, and received many awards, including Best Arts/Culture story from the OC Press Club and Best Blog in Orange County in 2010. I was an arts, culture and health reporter at The Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper, and an entertainment and pop culture reporter at The Bakersfield Californian. I've also written for ARTnews, Modern Painters, Art + Auction, Art Ltd., ArtVoices Magazine, the OC Art Blog, Asian Week, the Albuquerque Journal, Tribal College Journal and the San Francisco Bay Guardian. I have taught journalism at UCLA, Glendale Community College and Cal State Fullerton. I also have some experience in PR and marketing, serving as the Director of Public Relations and Marketing for the Sawdust Art Festival in Laguna Beach. Other publications I have written for include the Times OC (a Sunday publication of the Los Angeles Times), artinfo.com, Laguna Beach Magazine, Newport Beach Magazine, UCI's Connect magazine, Montage Magazine, Bespoke Concierge, Omni Hotels Escapes and the Laguna Beach Independent. I obtained an honors B.A. degree in English and American Literature from Brown University and a master's degree in journalism from UC Berkeley. I enjoy writing, learning and teaching.
