Biography

Robert M. Cutler, educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and The University of Michigan, is a reporter, op-ed writer, analytical journalist, policy analyst, and international affairs scholar. He has seamlessly integrated all these roles ever since first covering university labor negotiations and writing book reviews for a local weekly in graduate school. He carried on through his first national op-eds (Christian Science Monitor and Los Angeles Times) in the 1980s. Particularly since the late 1990s, has written many hundreds of thousands of words of reportage, analysis, commentary, and opinion on international affairs, ranging widely across politics and economics, often focusing on energy security, ethnic conflict, and international relations and security issues in Europe and Eurasia. His work for the original Asia Times Online, for example, ranged from the Chinese demand for base metals to the Indian stock market, to Russian cellphone service, to attempts at economic reform in Central Asia, to Caspian Sea region oil and gas pipelines, to Turkish energy policy in the East Mediterranean, to domestic politics in Ukraine, to the fate of NATO in Europe, to the EU's relations with its various "neighborhoods", especially to the East. Most recently, he has written extensively on the Second Karabakh War between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and what its end means for the South Caucasus region, as well as for Turkey, Russia, and Iran. He has been interviewed countless times on these various topics—both for long-form (from 10 to 30 minutes) and short-form (sound-bite and background briefing) interviews—mainly on radio but also by Skype and Zoom for video broadcast. For almost 20 years since the Second Gulf War, he served periodically as resident international energy expert for the John Batchelor Show (WABC-AM, New York). Beyond the original Asia Times Online, he has written for many analytical publications such as Security Watch (International Relations and Security Network, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology–Zurich) and Central Asia–Caucasus Analyst (Johns Hopkins University). He has also published both straight reporting and analytical commentary in such energy trade journals as F[ormer] S[oviet] U[nion] Oil & Gas Monitor and Petroleum Economist. At the same time, he has contributed op-eds to various Canadian newspapers such as the National Post, Montreal Gazette, as well as others. He was Chair, Board of Directors, Montreal Press Club, 2014-2019, and is a member of the National Press Club (Washington) and Press Club Europa (Brussels). He has published dozens of refereed academic articles, policy articles and book chapters, contributed op-ed columns to first-rank international newspapers, and is generally agreed to be an extraordinary editor. He has consulted to the private sector, NGOs, and governments; led policy and academic research teams; and produced briefings and analytical bulletins. Beyond being a reporter and analyst, specializing in content-provision, his skill-set also includes the design and implementation of editorial and media-communications strategies. He cut his teeth on media systems by analyzing how the Soviet foreign-propaganda making system affected Soviet foreign-policy making in the 1970s for his doctoral dissertation. He speaks English, French, and Russian, and reads eight other languages. He has international experience in over three dozen countries in the Americas, Europe, and Asia.
