Biography
I am an award-winning queer-trans science journalist and children's book writer; generally, I write about science, gender, sexuality, caste and health. Currently, I am an Assistant Professor of Practice at the Centre for Writing and Pedagogy, Krea University, Andhra Pradesh, where I teach writing and communication to enthusiastic undergraduate students. I am also a part of the feminist multimedia science collective TheLifeofScience.com. Further, I write one column with The Wire (Science) focusing on the intersections between science and gender, and a biweekly newsletter with four other writers for The News Minute titled "The Next Wave" (sign up here!) that focuses on deeply reported pieces on gender. I have previously written a weekly column with LGBTQ Nation focusing on international affairs. I am also a part of the Science and Media Working Group hosted by SciComm Thinklabs of Foundation for Advancement of Science and Technology -- India. I have received research and practice grants from the National Association for Science Writers (NASW), USA, the Transforming Education for Sustainable Futures (TESF) project, India, and the reFrame Institute of Art and Expression, India. My tryst with journalism began in 2010, while I was still in school, when I started working with The Times of India - Newspaper in Education (ToI-NIE) and The Telegraph in Schools (TTIS). Since then, my work has been featured in Gaylaxy Magazine, Feminism in India, Kafila, The Raiot, The Wire Science, The Wire, Economic and Political Weekly, IndiaBioScience.org, TheLifeofScience.com, The Swaddle, Scientific American, FiftyTwo.in, Doing Sociology, LGBTQ Nation and The Hindu (Science). I have also published several peer-reviewed papers. My latest academic publication can be found here. I have also written two children's book, one titled The Plant Whisperer and the other titled Grace: One Engineer's Fight to Make Science Education Accessible For All. Both the books have been published by Pratham Books (2021, 2023) and are free to read in multiple languages on their Storyweaver platform. In the year 2023, The Plant Whisperer was featured in Tata Trusts' Parag Honour List and has been long-listed for the Green Literature Festival's Honour List. In 2023, I was also featured in Egomonk QueerTWENTY cohort of 2022 as one of the twenty influential queer-trans people in India. The same year, I also received the Laadli Media and Advertising Award for Gender Sensitivity in the "Web Features (English)" category for my investigative report on gendered housing in science institutions and how they exclude transgender, gender non-conforming and gender non-binary persons. This report demonstrated the arbitrary rules around gender-segregated housing in Indian science institutes and their effects on institutional cultures. Moreover, I have been invited to give talks at various forums, including the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru; South City International School, Kolkata; CSIR-Centre for Molecular Biology, Hyderabad; Asian College of Journalism, Chennai; Savitribai Phule Pune University; Sangath India; Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali, Bhopal, Thiruvananthapuram and Pune; Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Goa, Gandhinagar and Kharagpur; Azim Premji University, Bangalore; Sambhaavanaa Institute, Palampur; Ashoka University; Microsoft; Anveshi Research Centre for Women’s Studies; National Institute of Technical Teachers' Training and Research, Chennai; DE Shaw and Co; the University of Hyderabad; Dhisha Kerala; and the Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS), Mumbai and Hyderabad.
