Biography

I'm an essayist, commentator, and journalist published in both the United States and the United Kingdom. My areas of expertise include British politics, transatlantic comparison, the LGBT community, and masculinity as a social construct. Based out of Chicago, I make frequent trips to London. I got my start in journalism when I was recruited to write for Rise Over Run Magazine, a small website based in Bowling Green, Kentucky. I began writing a weekly column, as well as several features, focusing on the local gay community. After graduating with my BA from Western Kentucky University, I moved to Chicago. In Chicago, I began a new career in mortgages, gaining experience in underwriting, processing, and sales. I have worked for two of the largest companies in the Chicago market, serving as a pointperson in acquisitions and managing pipelines for top producing loan officers. This has further added to my ability to comment on political matters, giving me a firm economic grounding in addition to my academic background in history and gender studies. After some time in mortgages, I again returned to writing. I was a regular contributor at The Columnist, a British website dedicated to news and analysis from across the political spectrum. After it shut down, I turned my attentions to freelancing, gaining bylines at The Advocate and Salon. I am now a freelance writer, most recently a frequent contributor to the Independent. I am currently working on my first novel, an intersectional epic fantasy. When not writing, I enjoy listening to country music, collecting antique books, researching local and LGBT history, genealogy, and beer. I'm always open and looking for pitches, which can be sent to skylar.bakerjordan@gmail.com.
