Before joining States Newsroom in June 2022, Sonny had been retired from the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (January 2020) after 12 ½ years as the paper’s top investigative editor, supervising a team of four reporters. During retirement, he worked as a contract editor. He also has served as a Senior Fellow in the USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism’s National Fellowship, a program that supports journalists pursuing ambitious projects about health and wellbeing.
