Stephen Angbulu is a journalist, columnist and author currently serving as the State House correspondent for The Punch, Nigeria’s most widely read newspaper. He is an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, The PUNCH Media Academy and the Pan-Atlantic University’s School of Media and Communication and the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, where he was a fellow of the prestigious MTN Media Innovation Programme. His reportage also includes significant political events, such as the 2023 general elections, during which he covered the presidential primaries and campaigns of the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party. Stephen covered the 2023 elections from Borno State, Northeast Nigeria, the political base of the APC’s Vice-Presidential candidate, now Vice President Kashim Shettima. He also covered former President Muhammadu Buhari’s participation at various high-level forums, including the World Bank’s International Development Association Heads of State Summit in Dakar, Senegal, in July 2022. A United Nations-trained sustainability journalist, Stephen was part of Nigeria’s media delegation at UN Climate Change Summit, COP28, in Dubai, writing pieces on Africa’s struggle to balance economic growth with climate commitments. He has also written investigative reports exposing human rights abuses by the Shari’a police in Kano and the plight of retirees defrauded by failed business schemes. His column, ‘Behind the Rock,’ gives readers an insider’s view of Nigeria’s seat of power, the Aso Rock Villa, and explores less-publicised aspects of the Nigerian presidency. Stephen is a recipient of the Royal African Medal presented to 100 outstanding African youths by the Ooni of Ife in July 2024. He has pursued several certifications hosted by the United Nations Information Centre, the University of Iowa and the International Organisation for Migration. He is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered). Besides journalism, Stephen is passionate about promoting a reading culture among the youth. In 2018, he founded the Readers’ Circle Book Club Africa to help young professionals maintain effective reading habits despite their busy lives. With a membership spanning six continents, the club is part of Stephen’s broader mission to foster a culture of learning and intellectual growth among Africa’s youth. His TEDx talk, ‘Changing the World through Reading,’ highlights his belief in the transformative power of reading for growth. In 2022, he authored The Ultimate Reading Guide: Easy and Proven Hacks for Choosing, Reading and Gleaning the Best from Books, an interactive book offering practical advice on building a robust reading habit for young adults and kids.
