Biography

Stephen Kafeero is a distinguished journalist based in Uganda and one of the leading voices covering social justice, human rights, state violence, protest movements, and economic affairs across East Africa. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Journalism from Nkumba University and has completed postgraduate training at the Aga Khan University Graduate School of Media and Communications (AKUGSMC) in Nairobi, along with numerous fellowships and training programs both within and outside Uganda He began his media career shortly after high school, contributing to national newspapers such as The Independent Magazine before transitioning into news analysis and special projects. Upon graduation, he joined the Daily Monitor under Nation Media Group in Uganda. In 2016, he further honed his multimedia and investigative skills during a year at the Nation Media Group Lab at AKUGSMC Returning to the newsroom, Stephen pivoted toward Special Projects and Investigations, focusing on human rights, state accountability, and institutional scrutiny. His reporting has included notable exposure of human rights violations, including nationwide killings of women during 2017–18 In addition to his work with the Daily Monitor, Stephen now serves as East Africa Correspondent for the Committee to Protect Journalists, covering press freedom issues and threats to journalists in the region Describing himself as an engaged citizen and activist, Stephen is especially passionate about Human Rights, Media, Politics, and Law. Over nearly a decade, he has authored more than 2,000 articles across prominent regional and international platforms such as Daily Monitor, The East African, AllAfrica, Quartz, Global Investigative Journalism Network, and others. Off the clock, he engages in research and consultancy work, and is a founding member of Shelter, Health & Education, a community-based organisation supporting marginalized girls. Stephen also provides media and communications support to various civic projects he helps establish or collaborate with, and maintains a keen interest in the tourism sector
