Company Info

Sacramento Observer

The Sacramento Observer is a historic African American newspaper founded in November 1962. It is recognized as one of the leading Black publications in the nation. Originally established as The Sacramento Outlook in 1942, it was rebranded after being acquired by a group led by William Hanford Lee. The paper was created to address the lack of coverage of Sacramento’s Black community in mainstream media. The Observer focuses on providing journalism excellence and advocating for African American communities. It has a legacy of over 60 years, earning more than 700 local and national awards for its journalism and community service. The publication offers a broadsheet format that covers local and national news, emphasizing issues such as civil rights, education, and social justice. It also engages with the community through events like Juneteenth, promoting education on Black history and empowerment. The current publisher, Larry Lee, continues the family legacy established by his father.
