Biography

Ikechukwu Onyekwelu is an alumnus of the Radio Netherlands Training Centre (RNTC), Hilversum, Netherlands; Bloomberg Executive Financial Journalism Training as Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa fellowship programme (BMIA), and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Technology, (KNUST) Kumasi, Ghana. At RNTC, he took a course in ‘Producing Media to Counter Disinformation’ and at KNUST; he studied Philosophy and Social Sciences. He has taken a number of other professional courses such as the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism Fellowship’s ‘Regulators Monitoring Programme (REMOP) and the Thomson Reuters Online Digital Journalism course. Onyekwelu has about two decades of experience in education and communication. His communications experiences have spanned both business journalism and public relations. While a teacher he taught French at one of the most prestigious Catholic secondary schools in Anambra State. From April 2022 to January 2023, he led a dynamic team of young people at Precise Limited, a public relations agency and managed both Nigerian and multinational accounts such as Coca-Cola, a global drinks company; OCP Africa, a Moroccan fertilizer and Africa’s second-largest maker of fertilizers; British American Tobacco; Mojec International; Seplat Energy; Henkel; Natures Gentle Touch; and the Nestoil Group of companies. Prior to his reputation design and public relations stunt at Precise Limited, his last role at BusinessDay Media Limited was online news editor in December 2022. Before then he worked as an energy analyst, a multimedia news producer and an education correspondent at BusinessDay, Nigeria’s largest national financial newspaper from 2016 to 2022. In these roles, he generated and produced content for BusinessDay on energy, education, tax and political economy. This implied constantly researching trends in the oil and gas sector, basic and higher education; in addition to trends in talent management. The outcome of these various research is published weekly. He also led the publication of a compendium of secondary schools in Lagos. His other responsibilities at BusinessDay required that he contribute content to two other sections of the newspaper publication: Tax and Retail & Consumer Business. These pages were published weekly and he wrote stories for them. Between 2014 and 2015, Ikechukwu was an independent researcher and an associate library member at the Lagos Business School with research works on “Corporate Governance, Board Effectiveness, Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility.” His duties for one calendar year as a self-employed included conducting research projects for faculty members at LBS. This exposed him to new fields of interest, such as corporate governance and sustainability. At Holy Child Secondary School, Isuofia, Anambra State he taught French and worked as a master of ceremonies from 2012 to 2013. He taught French to Junior Secondary 1 to 3 students. For four days of the week, he prepared effective lesson plans and delivered the lessons to these classes. The role of master of ceremony mandated him to coordinate and animate every public function the school organised. He also worked as a marketing and sales manager at Messers Fidel Technology Complex, Gboko, Benue State from 2007 – 2008.
