Biography
Steve Wright is a Pulitzer-nominated, award-winning storyteller. He earned his first paycheck as a reporter four decades ago -- before he was old enough to drive. A graduate of Kent State University's School of Journalism, he became a reporter for the Columbus Dispatch newspaper. Wright covered popular music, general assignment, features and breaking news. He spent the most time covering urban affairs, policy, municipal government, planning, zoning, smart growth, development and related high-impact issues. On election day 2000, Wright and his wife Heidi Johnson-Wright moved to Miami Florida from Columbus, Ohio. He soon became the senior urban policy advisor for the Chair of the Miami City Commission. Using his communication skills and expertise in urban policy, Wright wrote the legislation to create a multi-million dollar affordable housing trust. He also managed projects that created the largest linear urban park in the city's history. Wright also led the review of Miami 21 -- the award-winning form based code, the first of its kind for a major city in America. In 2010, Wright moved back to the private sector to lead marketing and business development efforts for a global modern architecture firm, a legacy mobility engineering firm and a start-up urban design study that got worldwide recognition and grew by more than 1000 percent in billings, thanks to his public relations and marketing skills. Wright has blogged daily for more than a decade, posting fine art photography of his global travels. He also blogs about urban issues and dedicates much of his blog space to advocacy for people with disabilities. For more than three decades, Wright has been the spouse of Heidi Johnson-Wright, a word-renown expert on the Americans with Disabilities Act. Also an award-winning author, journalist and advocate, Johnson-Wright has used a wheelchair for mobility for four decades. Together, they restored a 100-year-old house in Little Havana, where they care for HoneyBear the Siamese rescue cat and a colony of other strays that they provide food, water and shelter to. Wright is known as America's go-to journalist on national articles that report on urban design and architecture that accommodates people with disabilities. He also consults with leading local, regional, national and global design firms to improve their storytelling.
