Biography

I'm an editor on the Washington Post's climate & environment team, leading coverage on policy, politics and power. Previously I was an enterprise editor with the Los Angeles Times, and before that was national correspondent in the DC bureau of McClatchy Newspapers, which includes the Miami Herald and 28 other newspapers nationwide. Prior to 2017, I was based in China, as McClatchy's Beijing Bureau Chief, and before that, I worked at The Sacramento Bee for 14 years, in various reporting, editing and management roles. I started my career in Tokyo at the Asahi Evening News. After earning a M.S. in journalism at Columbia, where I met my future wife, I worked at papers in Louisiana, Georgia and North Carolina before joining The Bee in 1999. I also have knife skills. In 2009, I took a sabbatical for five months, working as a chef apprentice at Oliveto, an Italian restaurant in the Bay Area.
