Biography
I interview researchers about their published articles in science, engineering, artificial intelligence, business and economics, humanities, health sciences, and education research journals. From there I collaborate with the researchers to produce a Research & Innovation magazine or global multimedia news releases. The position includes: - monitoring recently published research from the university - long listing and short listing research for media releases - the writing and (sub)editing of the release, headlines, captions, etc. - shooting, selecting and editing photos - searching for stock images, video and audio - designing graphics for websites and social media - shooting and editing very short videos - writing and posting to social media - media reach reports to measure the global and national media coverage - acting as media liaison for TV and radio interviews. I started out as an electrical engineer, but promptly went into coding and software implementation at industrial sites. From there into business analysis and corporate business consulting for large organizations. This included 2 years for global auditing firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers at an IBM manufacturing facility in San Jose, California. The area is part of Silicon Valley, the world's foremost digital innovation hub. Before officially changing careers from IT to journalism I farmed organic vegetables for a year, and volunteered at an animal health charity. Then a 1 year full-time Honours degree in journalism, and a 2 year stint at a trade magazine in the IT industry, before joining the University of Johannesburg in 2014.
