Biography

Tim Philp has enjoyed science since he was old enough to read. Having worked in technical fields all his life, he shares his love of science with readers weekly. He can be reached by e-mail at: tphilp@bfree.on.ca or via snail mail c/o The Expositor. Tim Philp was born in Toronto and went to school, first in Toronto, and then Brantford. He did post-secondary education in Waterloo. Tim Philp was the owner of Tim Philp & Associates, a computer consulting company in Brantford. He had over 30 year's experience in computer and electronics engineering, working on projects as diverse as computerisation of railway locomotives for CP Rail, electrical control systems for forklift trucks, and classified electronics warfare design for the Canadian Navy. He is also spent much time designing software programs for Internet database management and electronic commerce. Tim has been active in the community as a volunteer. In the past, Tim served as Director of Sport Safety of the Ontario Underwater Council and published SCUBA diving accident reports in an effort to improve the safety of the sport. He was also President of the Underwater Club of Canada, the oldest diving club in Canada. He served as vice-chair of the Brantford Public Library Board and chaired their finance committee for six years as well as having served on several provincial library associations such as the Strategic Directions Council and as vice-chair of the Ontario Library Trustees Association. Tim also served as President of the Brant Community Social Planning Council. He was also Chair of Rosewood House, a group home for people with mental difficulties. As well, he was a director of the Boys and Girls Club of Brantford. He also served as a director of the Brant Skills Development Group dedicated to encouraging skilled trades training. Tim became involved with the BCI Alumni Association where he serves as co-vice chair. This group is dedicated to supporting Brantford Collegiate Institute. Tim also active in the local media. He currently writes a science and a local history column in The Expositor and has been published in the Toronto Star and about 25 other publications. As well, Tim hosted an hour-long television program called Politically Speaking on Rogers Television. Many years ago, Tim started a movement to form a community network in Brant County that became the Brant FreeNet. This non-profit organisation became the first and one of the largest providers of Internet access in Brant County. This project was dedicated to providing free and low-cost access to the Internet. Tim devoted many hours of volunteer time to running this organisation. Tim originated a program with the FreeNet to provide people with free surplus computers from the City of Brantford and local industry. This program has put almost 200 computers in the hands of people who otherwise would never get one. For the past 20 years, Tim has been involved with Rosewood House, a homeless shelter. He served as board chairman, and upon the death of the Executive Director, he assumed the post to keep the organisation running. Today, he still serves as Executive Director. His hobbies are computers, photography, writing, woodworking, and being a servant to a demanding cat.
