Biography
Wendy L. Wilson is currently a freelance contributing editor, content creator and editorial consultant. She is an award-winning journalist and former Managing Editor of EBONY Magazine. In that role, she was responsible for content planning, top editing, developing special projects, managing copy workflow, setting deadlines, assigning features and directing the editorial staff. She is also the former Managing Editor of JET magazine and News Editor of ESSENCE magazine where she was responsible for assigning various in-depth feature stories, profiles, special reports, and commentaries for the news section. She is the former news editor for ESSENCE.com, where she provided daily news coverage and content for the Web site, including breaking news and exclusive stories. Wilson is the recipient of the 2010 New York Association of Black Journalists award in the Magazine Public Affairs category and in the Online/New Media category for Public Affairs. After joining Essence in 2005 as a staff writer, she contributed to several mainstay articles, including Essence’s “25 Most Beautiful Women,” “25 Best Companies,” “Women of Influence” and the “12-month Home Ownership Campaign,” which won the 2007 National Association of Black Journalists Award for best magazine business story. She sat on the planning committee for two of ESSENCE’s most inspirational events: Women Shaping the World Leadership Summit and The Essence Music Festival. For several years, she was responsible for recruiting, hiring and managing college students for the ESSENCE Editorial Internship Program. Wilson is also the recipient of the 2001 Time Inc. President’s Award, one of the most prestigious honors awarded to company employees, for her role in adding diversity initiatives to the company’s workforce. Throughout her career she has interviewed heads of state, political candidates, moguls, activists, and entertainers but finds telling the stories of ordinary people experiencing extraordinary circumstances to be the most rewarding. Wendy is a graduate of Skidmore College and received a Masters degree in Journalism from New York University. She is a former board member of the New York Association of Black Journalists, a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and sits on the Skidmore College Alumni Board as the Chair of Diversity.
