U.S. NAVAL INSTITUTE

The U.S. Naval Institute (USNI) is a private, non-profit professional military association established in 1873 by naval officers. Based in Annapolis, Maryland, it operates independently of the U.S. Navy and government, promoting open discussion on naval strategy and professional development. With around 50,000 members, including active and retired personnel from the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, USNI also engages members from over 90 countries. USNI advances knowledge in sea power, national defense, and maritime heritage through various publications, including the monthly journal *Proceedings* and the bimonthly magazine *Naval History*. The organization publishes books on naval strategy and leadership and hosts events such as conferences and symposia focused on defense policy and maritime security. Additionally, USNI maintains digital platforms, including blogs and podcasts, to foster engagement with military professionals and the public. Its mission is to provide a forum for dialogue that enhances understanding of maritime issues and strengthens national defense.
