Biography

Wills is a news reporter with the DailyMail.com in New York, covering a wide range of stories from around the United States and the rest of the world. He has previously worked in the London office. During his time he has written a number of exclusives – one of which exposed government staff breaching employee guidelines by stealing personal data from within the US Department of Education. Personal student loan data was used to set up credit cards, apply for loans and set up cell phone accounts. The story was covered by a number of outlets including Fox News, MSNBC and Red Alert Politics. He has also completed a number of stories which have stemmed from successful Freedom of Information requests – including unearthing evidence councils in the UK were giving disabled parking permits to obese applicants. Before his move to London and then to the United States, he was part of the Mail Online’s graduate trainee programme – working with the Scottish Daily Mail and the South West News Service. During his time with the Scottish Daily Mail, he reported on a number of breaking news stories and conducted investigations into prisons, government databases and prolific criminals. His front pages have included an investigation into the Scottish Police DNA Database and a story revealing the extent of re-offending in Scotland. He also contributed to the leading story on HMRC investigating sports clubs in Scotland. After studying History and Politics at Newcastle University, he completed the NCTJ Multimedia Journalism course. During the NCTJ he wrote a number of pieces that received both national and worldwide attention, including a story about a Durham Rugby team running a Jimmy Savile-themed social, and the popularity of the viral video Milking. He also wrote stories on the recovery of coma patient Simon Hales and previewed the 2012 Middlesbrough by-election. Wills has vast experience in student journalism acting as both the News and Sports Editor of Newcastle University’s Student Newspaper, The Courier which won the Guardian Student Publication of the Year 2012. In May 2012, Wills was awarded the Press Association Prize for Excellence, for a range of stories he completed under his tenure as The Courier’s News Editor. These included an expose of rugby initiations at Northumbria University, an investigation into the mistreatment of Combined Honours students at Newcastle University and his following of the Josh Cryer Twitter abuse case throughout 2012. His work has also been published on Ones to Watch, which showcases the best of the UK’s student media, while his experiences as a student reporter were documented in an article for Wannabe Hacks. Wills was also co-editor of the student tabloid The Tab in Newcastle towards the end of 2012. During his time at The Courier he interviewed a wide range of people including Newcastle MP Nick Brown, former rugby players Matt Dawson and Alan Tait, as well as the cast of MTV’s most-watched UK series Geordie Shore. In one of his first experiences of a national newspaper, Wills worked at with The Independent on Sunday under the guidance of their Foreign News Editor and author of The Universal Journalist, David Randall. Wills has also completed a work placement with the Scottish Rugby Union Press Office, where he interviewed international players such as New Zealand’s Richie McCaw and Sonny Bill Williams, and former Scotland captain Mike Blair. He has also written for the Newcastle’s Evening Chronicle, The Journal and The Bath Chronicle. He graduated with a 2.1 in Politics and History in July 2012. In his spare time, Wills is a keen cricketer and golfer. He was a season ticket holder at Newcastle United and has started to follow the New York Rangers following his move stateside.
