Biography

I was on a train once. I was on a train many times, actually, but this one was special -- in hindsight. I had one duffle bag that I could stuff everything I owned into, a hand-me-down CD player and a guitar. What I'm describing may seem a bit romantic in that lonely traveler sort of way. But I was 16, pretty miserable and had absolutely no clue what was coming next, who I was going to stay with or where my next meal was coming from. It's a long story that involves a childhood of being tossed from one end of the socioeconomic spectrum to the other - from having everything to absolutely nothing. In the end, I'm now an adult, very much alive with some sort of clue about what's coming next. But now that the years have passed, I'm realizing that the misery I felt on that train and throughout my youth may be what is driving me to want to help. Yes, help. Journalism is my delivery method to help people, because I love them and because I care. It's my tool to challenge the system, or at the very least, get people talking. I research, write and photograph stories of people. I write about race, gender, immigration, environment and whatever else I come across that people would care about, whether that may be a children's reading program at the local library or a municipality's budget hole or residents of a neighborhood being forced out in the name of urban development.
