Biography
When I was nine years old my English teacher told me that I should be a journalist. A few months later I set up the first school newspaper with a friend and we called it John Perryn Monthly. I worked with a friend to create a monthly A4 sized publication which included ten pages filled with school news, interviews, photos, a crossword and competition page. Not long before our second edition was ready to go out to print, we found ourselves with rivals. They were a group of girls in the year above who called their dirty rag Flava after the Peter Andre single. Rather than being a voice for the pupils and staff at John Perryn Primary School their colour-printed 4-page piece of propaganda was filled with falsified celebrity interviews and awash with plagiarism. Our complaints to the headteacher were met on deaf ears and the Flava editors argued that their publication was superior due to it being in colour and typed up. In the end the teachers decided we should work together on producing one paper for the school. Their vision was a vision that is all too common in our society, one that values style over substance. I declined the offer of a merger and continued with my life, abandoning my journalistic ambitions along the way. It was not until the summer of 2020 at the age of 33 that my destiny was reawakened. I became a Community Reporter for a local newspaper called Bristol 24/7. After six months I had written almost seventy articles on a range of topics including politics, the environment, art, literature and personal stories. Many of my stories about inspiring people who were volunteers or activists within the community. I wrote several stories highlighting the housing crisis which made an impact; one resulted in a family finding more suitable accommodation. I covered stories about local people who had recently passed away, with an appropriate level of sensitivity. I received plenty of positive feedback from my stories because they were impactful and touched people emotionally.
